Every state does require that a cosmetologist be licensed in order to practice. To get that license you must complete courses from an approved school in that state. Specific vocational shoos will be able to provide classes and hands on training to meet their state requirements.
Training can be varied but usually lasts less than year. If you plan on owning your own salon, you may want to continue your education to get an associates or bachelors degree. This will help you learn about the business end of things to better prepare yourself.
Cosmetologists also will go through a long period of continual on the job training. This is important to get a feel for how things work in the real world as well as for developing your skills. You’ll have simple haircuts and shampooing to do with before the salon you work for is certain you can take on any challenge. It’s also important to stay current with trends and new fashions so you can meet the changing needs of clients.
To become certified you will have to pass a licensing exam. In some states this is only a written test while in other states it will also include an actual demonstration of certain skills. Depending on where you are, the training you have received could count towards your certification.
