June 9th, 2009

Cosmetologists should expect to have an array of job duties. Many of these are specialized skills and some others may be general work. Cosmetologists will spend most of their time cutting and styling hair. Some will provide services like hair coloring and permanent wave services. Cosmetologists often branch out into other personal services and do things like provide nail and skin treatments.

Cosmetologists are often asked to assist clients with choosing the best hair style and hair color. They may have to design home care instructions and help clients to develop an at home routine to care for their hair, nails or skin once they leave the salon.

Cosmetologists who own a salon or work for themselves will also need to be able to manage and supervise their business. This will include keeping inventory and managing financial accounts.

Some tasks that a cosmetologist may have to do if there are no other staff on hand, include cleaning up the salon area and shampooing hair.
